Job Description:

The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at Madison College is hiring a full-time Microbiology instructor. The department is seeking a reflective and innovative educator who will teach a minimum of 15 contact hours, including instruction at our regional campuses in Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Portage and/or Reedsburg. Faculty should be comfortable using learning management systems and implementing various instructional delivery methods, from face-to-face to technology-based modalities. In addition, faculty are expected to be innovative in their teaching approaches, using course-based research models to engage students in authentic research practices.

Full-time faculty work a nine-month contract for the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters), and teaching summer courses is optional, with additional pay.

Our goal is to conduct virtual interviews the weeks of April 21, and second round virtual interviews the week of May 12. Expected Start date: August 14, 2025.

This position reports to the Dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Essential Duties:
  • Teach Microbiology courses, and possibly other life science courses as needed, for a variety of target populations, including transfer students, professional health program students, and high school students enrolled in dual-credit course offerings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop course curriculum that is culturally responsive and inclusive of all student identities and experiences.
  • Use teaching strategies that are designed to engage students and promote success in Biology.
  • Continuously reflect on and refine teaching practices by engaging with student data to address and eliminate inequities in student experiences and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the Biology department by participating in department meetings, events, and service activities such as mentoring, assessment, and governance.
  • Contribute to student success and retention by advising students with course selection, career concerns, internships, and other matters.
  • Serve as an advocate for students and engages in activities that help students achieve their goals such as writing letters of recommendations, and/or helping students link with internships, service learning, job shadowing and other forms of networking.
  • Maintain a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Effective communication skills including demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. This includes, but is not limited to, knowledge/experience with current educational methods/strategies such as learner-centered instruction, active learning, assessment, evaluation, collaborative techniques, and strategies aimed at addressing inequities in student experiences and outcomes across race, gender, class, and disability.
  • Desire and ability to teach courses at both the collegiate transfer and technical/occupational program levels.
  • Ability to communicate complex and difficult concepts and ideas to students with varied backgrounds and levels of preparedness.
  • Engage in continuous improvement in the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods, as well as incorporating appropriate use of new and emerging technologies into the learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues on course and program promotion, direction, and innovation.


Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree in a Life Science

OR

Master's degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the field of Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Pathology, Genetics, Anatomy & Physiology, Botany; Environmental Science, Animal Biology, or Zoology.
