College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia's Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. The Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy has as its core mission the advancement of outstanding research and education. We work collaboratively to discover new knowledge through innovative biomedical research, to transmit that knowledge to students, and to train future researchers, educators, and health care professionals.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Research Associate to join our dynamic research focusing on kidney diseases. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. This position involves extensive cell culture studies and significant in vivo animal research using various transgenic and gene-knockout mouse models. The ideal candidate will have substantial prior experience in kidney research, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

Design and execute experiments with precision and scientific rigor.

Analyze complex data sets, summarize findings, and interpret results.

Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Collaborate effectively with team members on research projects.

Conduct cell culture studies and manage in vivo animal studies using multiple transgenic and geneknockout mouse models.

Provide administrative and technical support for research initiatives.

Oversee the ordering of supplies and the use of materials and equipment to ensure smooth operation of all laboratory functions.

Supervise and mentor technicians, PhD students, and other trainees (such as visiting scholars) in the laboratory.

Develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures.

Ensure compliance with regulations for biohazardous materials (Biological Safety), chemicals (Chemical Safety), anesthetic drugs (DEA), and experimental animals (LAS, IACUC).

Perform complex molecular biological, microscopic, histologic, and statistical/computational procedures.

Design and create cDNA constructs, including cloning, culture, and transformation of E. coli, and plasmid DNA isolation and transfection.

Maintain various mouse lines for kidney-related research and conduct studies on the pathogenesis of kidney diseases using cell culture and animal models.

Maintain and update animal protocols for mouse research.

Prepare findings for presentations at national and international meetings, publications, and grant applications.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or other natural life sciences directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and at least two years of experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory, particularly clinical trial research.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural life sciences directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of five years' kidney research, clinical experience, and supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctor of Philosophy or Medical Doctor degree

Documented kidney research experience with a strong publication record.

Extensive experience in performing complex animal model studies.

Proven expertise in advanced tissue staining, imaging, and biochemical analyses.

Experience in animal husbandry, particularly with transgenic and gene knockout models.

Medical background is highly preferred because individual hired for this position is responsible for research projects that are highly clinically relevant.

Good management and supervisory skills.

Knowledge of AU and MCG policies and procedures that govern grant expenditures and grant submissions.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
Ability to design and make cDNA construct for gene expressions (including restriction enzyme digestion, cloning, culture and transformation of the bacteria E. coli, and the isolation of plasmid DNA for transfection into mammalian cells). Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to maintain confidentiality, complete work and meet deadlines. Ability to manage and schedule resources. Ability to manage project expenses, reagents, equipment and other supplies. Ability to work independently. Ability to pay close attention to detail.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Knowledge of AU and MCG policies and procedures that govern grant expenditures and grant submissions. Proficiency in behavioral testing and interpretation of results. Extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols including all equipment used in the conduct of the biomedical research protocols.

SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to communicate with students, staff and faculty, who are directly or indirectly involved in the projects. Research skills related to studying the pathogenesis of kidney diseases by using cell culture (including isolation of kidney proximal tubules as well as glomeruli to establish primary cultures of kidney proximal tubular epithelial cells as well as glomerular podocytes). Superb research skills in animal studies involving survival animal surgeries (including induction of acute kidney injury by ischemia/reperfusion surgery and induction of chronic kidney fibrosis by unilateral ureteral obstruction). Research skills in genetically manipulated animal models (including understanding and utilizing the Cre/Lox technology, gene knockout, transgenic and gene knock-in animal models). Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking, prioritization and organizational skills. Strong collaborative skills.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Pay Band: B9

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
